‘One Thing Bout’ Music, When It Hits, You Feel NO Pain’ – Dead Prez

I remember when I was growing up, my older brothers were always playing Hip Hop music around the house, I remember when my older bother went through his Tupac phase wearing all these baggy jeans, oversized T-shirts, and rockin’ his sneakers and bumping to Tupac of course, Biggie, Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, Ghost Face Killer, Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Busta Rhymes, and Jay Z to name a few. My first preference of music is Hip Hop, I grew up listening to this music and I fell in love with it. Listening to Hip Hop music from back then to now, you can hear the difference and it is sad to see how juvenile the music that we are exposed to. We need to be exposed to good music, whether its Hip Hop, House, Neo Soul, Indie, Dub Step, Kwaito, Reggae, or Rock.

Music is an art form; it’s a medium that is created though sound. It is something that is so simple but it can make you feel so good. It is like an artist painting a picture with words. Music in the 90s was real, the music was not ‘bubble gum’ as it is now in the 21st century, and there was no Nicky Minaj, Lil Wayne, 2 chains, Gucci mane etc. Music back then had substance, and it talked to the people. The music that we are exposed to in the media it is just mediocre, and some of the music of today doesn’t even make sense. There is so much beautiful music that we are unconscious of, there is so much more that our ears need to hear. Like a burst of sound, translated to emotions to your heart, and like the quote says ‘when it hits, you feel no pain’.

But in Hip Hop nowadays, there are still new kats such as Kendrick Lamar, Chuuwee, J. Cole, Dom Kennedy, Joey Bada$$, ScHoolboyQ, A$AP Rocky, Khuli Chana, Curren$y, Hip Hop Panstula, Proverb and Kabomo to name a few that are

pushing good music. Music makes you feel things you never felt before, it hits the right spots, it heals you, it talks to you, it takes you to another place. You can be happy or sad, it is an escape. Music is power, music is life!
